What is a dental implant?

A dental implant works by effectively replacing the root and crown of your tooth. With a titanium screw inserted into your jawbone holding a natural looking and very strong restoration (crown, bridge or denture) in place. As the months and years pass, your bone naturally fuses with the screw and the implant becomes a part of your body. It won’t move or loosen overtime (as a denture tends to do) and will also have no effect on your remaining teeth when it is being fitted. Unlike a bridge, which requires significant removal of healthy enamel from nearby teeth to hold it in place.

The fitting of an implant will take place under a local anaesthetic and in a standard procedure, should take around one hour. Obviously every case is different and you will be fully informed regarding your particular needs before any treatment begins.

Providing you have a good level of general health and a enough strength and density in your gums then dental implants are likely to be a suitable option for you. Patients with a history of gum disease may require bone grafting and/or sinus lift before their dental implants can be fitted- again if this is relevant to your case you will be fully informed at your initial consultation.

A dental implant offers a very secure, strong and natural looking replacement for one, several, even all of your teeth. Implants are now very well established and considered highly safe. They have a very high success rate (over 95%) and offer a truly long-term solution for tooth replacement, meaning that they are also a highly cost-effective option for many patients.
Dental implants have the potential to last for many years, often just as long as your natural teeth.
