Cosmetic dentistry has gained immense popularity in recent years, offering individuals the opportunity to enhance the aesthetics of their smiles. However, a common question that arises is whether cosmetic dentistry is a viable option for those with existing dental issues. In this comprehensive exploration, we will delve into the world of cosmetic dentistry, its various procedures, and address the crucial question: Can I get cosmetic dentistry if I have existing dental issues?

The Intersection of Cosmetic Dentistry and Existing Dental Issues

Cosmetic dentistry is a specialised branch of dental care that focuses on improving the appearance of teeth and smiles. While traditional dentistry emphasises oral health and the treatment of dental diseases, cosmetic dentistry is elective and aims to enhance the overall visual appeal of the teeth.

Popular Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures

  1. Teeth Whitening: Teeth whitening is one of the most sought-after cosmetic dental procedures. It involves the application of bleaching agents to lighten the colour of teeth, effectively removing stains and discolouration. This non-invasive procedure can be administered in a dental office or through at-home kits prescribed by a dentist.
  2. Dental Veneers: Dental veneers, typically made of porcelain, are thin shells customised to cover the front surface of teeth. Veneers offer a solution for issues such as chipped, stained, or misaligned teeth, providing a durable and natural-looking enhancement.
  3. Orthodontic Treatments: While orthodontic treatments are often associated with traditional dentistry, they play a crucial role in cosmetic dentistry. Braces and clear aligners like Invisalign are used to straighten teeth and correct bite issues, contributing to improved appearance and functionality.
  4. Dental Implants: Dental implants present a permanent solution for missing teeth. This procedure involves the placement of titanium screws into the jawbone, providing a robust foundation for artificial teeth. In addition to restoring functionality, implants enhance the overall appearance of the smile.
  5. Dental Bonding: Dental bonding entails the application of a tooth-coloured resin to repair or enhance the appearance of a tooth. It serves as a versatile and cost-effective solution for issues such as chipped or discoloured teeth.
  6. Gum Contouring: Also known as gum reshaping, this procedure involves the removal of excess gum tissue to create a more proportionate and visually appealing smile. Gum contouring is often performed in conjunction with other cosmetic dental treatments.

The Benefits of Cosmetic Dentistry

Beyond the enhancement of aesthetics, cosmetic dentistry offers numerous benefits that contribute to both physical and mental well-being.

Improved Self-Confidence

A confident smile can significantly boost self-esteem and overall confidence. Many individuals who undergo cosmetic dentistry procedures report feeling more comfortable and secure in various social and professional settings.

Enhanced Oral Health

While the primary focus of cosmetic dentistry is on aesthetics, several procedures contribute to improved oral health. Straightening misaligned teeth, for example, can make oral hygiene practices more effective, reducing the risk of gum disease and cavities.

Long-lasting Results

Advancements in dental materials and technology have led to more durable and long-lasting cosmetic dentistry solutions. Procedures such as dental implants and veneers can provide years of improved aesthetics and functionality.

Personalised Treatment Plans

Cosmetic dentistry is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Dentists work closely with patients to develop personalised treatment plans that address individual concerns and goals. This ensures that the results are natural-looking and tailored to each person’s unique features.

Devonshire Dental Care provides the best dental care that I have ever experienced. I recently developed a bad toothache and after having no sleep overnight, I called them as soon as they opened and not only did Nicola and her team fit me in but also relieved my pain. Nicola also went above and beyond in my opinion when she called me later in the day to see if I was doing ok and to let me know I should come back in if I had any problems. Thank you Nicola and the amazing team at Devonshire Dental, you are outstanding and I cannot recommend you more.

I went to Devonshire on a friend’s recommendation after receiving a treatment plan from another dentist indicating I need 4 fillings. Nicola made me feel at ease from the moment I walked in. Her professionalism is complemented by her friendly demeanour. Nicola advised I only needed 1 filling rather than 4. The filling was done perfectly and looks completely natural. My hygiene appointment was quick and thorough. The staff are really friendly and professional. Having trust in your dentist is so important and seeing Nicola has made me feel glad I came to the practice. I’ll be a returning patient and will recommend to all friends and colleagues.

Everyone there has a very relaxed and friendly approach, Alan talks you through your treatment options thoroughly and, after seeing him for 10 years I can confirm his work is to a very high stardard. I have been terrified of the dentist my whole life but going to Alan Rennie has really helped calm me down to the point going is much easier.
